Maybe the most durable of all the Little Rascals, William "Buckwheat" Thomas first crashed the Our Gang ranks at the prodding of his mother. "I started when I was three years old," Thomas said, "My mother just took me out to the studio on a regular interview day, and they needed a person, and that was it." The combination of a bewitching smile and deep luminous eyes won the Hal Roach studio's favor. The Buckwheat character was pigtailed, named for a breakfast food and wore the same old patched gingham clothing. Shy and well liked around the Our Gang sets, he enjoyed what he was doing. In all he appeared in 93 Our Gang comedies over a ten year career. He dropped out of show business after his contract expired, and went on to work as a film technician for Technicolor.
