Sally Ride
Biography
In 1977 Sally Ride was finishing her Ph.D. in physics when she saw an ad in the Stanford student newspaper saying that NASA was looking for astronauts—and for the first time was allowing women to apply. Sally sent in her application— along with 8,000 other people. She was one of 35 people—including six women—chosen to join the astronaut corps.
Sally Ride Science at UC San Diego
Sally Ride Science at UC San Diego is a nonprofit organization run by the University of California, San Diego. It was founded as a company in 2001 by Sally Ride, America’s first woman in space, along with Tam O’Shaughnessy, Karen Flammer, Terry McEntee, and Alann Lopes to inspire young people in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) and to promote STEM literacy.
