1. 1939 – Starred in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, directed by Frank Capra. The movie won stardom for Stewart and earned him an Oscar nomination for best actor.

2. 1941 – Academy award for Best Actor for his role in Philadelphia Story, directed by George Cukor, 1940.

3. 1946 – Starred in It’s a Wonderful Life, directed by Frank Capra. Earned Stewart an Oscar nomination for best actor. Film was to become one of his best known and best loved.

4. 1950 – Stewart’s agent, Lew Wasserman, made precedent-setting deal with Universal Studios for Stewart’s role in Winchester 73, whereby Stewart received royalties from the film rather than a flat salary. Winchester 73 was the first of eight films with Anthony Mann.

5. 1965 – Golden Globes Cecile B. DeMille Award for Lifetime Achievement.

6. 1974 – Golden Globe Award for Best Actor for the television drama, Hawkins.

7. 1980 – Lifetime Achievement Award, American Film Institute.

8. 1983 – Kennedy Center Honors Award.

9. 1984 – Academy Award for Lifetime Achievement.
