The Greatest I Have Ever Known
It just so happens that I never knew him personally. Nor was I even alive by the time he began to be missed. In fact, I was ignorant of his once existing until that fateful day when John Belushi was born in front of my eyes: I was up late one night, and there he was, on an AMC presentation of a movie entitled Continental Divide. I immediately remembered his face. My flashback involved live concert footage of him and Mr. Aykroyd doing the Blues Brothers bit. What at the time to me was a mere skit suddenly became a very personal discovery that the man behind the sunglasses was much more than just a character. He was a person with a whole other level of ability I had never been acquainted with. This new dimension soon engulfed my idea of what funny was and what it could be. It trampled my idea of magnetism, because his was like none I had ever seen. Moreover, that intrinsic happy-go-lucky attitude that just cannot be faked engraved his uniqueness and honesty into my image of him. That, again, being something I had never experienced from the normal popular culture. A few movies, SNL episodes, vinyl and concert tapes later, I was hooked. I subscribed for life: on the sincerity, on the humor, on the expressions, on the voice, on the pure selfish joy I received from just being a third-party on-looker. How he affected and inspired me has no words that can describe such an impact. And the rest is my own history. The inevitable sadness at the end of all my discovery was when I started to realize that at some point he stopped sharing all the aforementioned with our world. The legacy of his short but hefty set of works lives on through his fans, but that in no way prepared me for the abrupt end. In any case, I celebrate his life and hope that more than a few people are affected by his work. I know I have.
