On January 27, 2003, soccer club D.C. United finalized a trade for former Chicago Fire forward Hristo Stoitchkov. In his new role, Stoitchkov will serve as both a player and assistant coach.

"His experience at the highest levels of soccer in the world will be a welcome addition to our organization," said United technical director Dave Kasper.
