- Matson led the nation in rushing yardage, touchdowns, and scoring
as an All-American senior in 1951 for the University of San Francisco.
- He finished 9th in Heisman Trophy balloting in 1951.
- He won a bronze for the United States for the 440-meter race and
a gold for the 1600-meter relay in the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki.
- Matson was the #1 draft pick of the Chicago Cardinals in the 1952
NFL draft.
- He became one of the first three African-Americans on the Chicago
Cardinals.
- He shared Rookie-of-the-Year honors with 49ers' Hugh McElhenny after
the 1952 campaign.
