as an All-American senior in 1951 for the University of San Francisco.
- He finished 9th in Heisman Trophy balloting in 1951.

a gold for the 1600-meter relay in the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki.
- Matson was the #1 draft pick of the Chicago Cardinals in the 1952
