- A consensus All-American in 1947 at the University of
Texas, Layne finished 9th in Heisman Trophy balloting in 1946 and 6th
in 1947.
- Led the nation in completion percentage in 1946 as a
junior.
- Retired in 1962 after 15 seasons in the NFL with
then-NFL records for passes attempted, passes completed, passing yards,
and touchdown passes.
