Achievements

  • Won championships with the Lions in 1952, 1953, and 1957 (the last championships won by the Lions).
  • A consensus All-American in 1947 at the University of Texas, Layne finished 9th in Heisman Trophy balloting in 1946 and 6th in 1947.
  • Led the nation in completion percentage in 1946 as a junior.
  • Retired in 1962 after 15 seasons in the NFL with then-NFL records for passes attempted, passes completed, passing yards, and touchdown passes.
  • Perhaps best remembered for his last-second touchdown pass to win the 1953 NFL championship for the Detroit Lions, Layne was one of the NFL’s first great passers and was inducted into the Football Hall of Fame in 1967.
