Raised in Los Angeles, it was only appropriate that Tom
Fears starred collegiately at UCLA and professionally with the Los Angeles
Rams. And star he did, retiring as the first pass receiver in Pro Football
history to catch an awesome number of forward passes (400). Following a war-time stint in the United States Army Air Corps and his final two years at UCLA, Fears began his professional career in 1948 with a bang: he intercepted two passes (returning one for a touchdown) in his very first game. It soon became apparent, however, that Fears' exceptional pass-catching skills were best utilized on the offensive side of the ball. Over the next three seasons (1948-1950), Fears caught an astounding 212 passes for 2,827 yards and 20 touchdowns. Tom Fears, still holder of the NFL record with 18 receptions in a single game, was rewarded for his outstanding career with a 1970 election into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. |
