Few, if any, defensive lineman wreaked havoc on an
opponent's offense quite like Doug Atkins did. Atkins combined almost
inhuman strength with size, skill, agility, and aggressiveness to become
one of the greatest defensive lineman the game has ever known. Best remembered for his legendary temper on the field, Atkins originally attended the University of Tennessee on a basketball scholarship. Though his height (6' 8") was well-suited for basketball, his awesome size (280 lbs.) was what grabbed the attention of Tennessee's football coach. Thus began a brilliant 17-year, 205-game career (record at the time for defensive lineman) that culminated with an election to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1982. |
