In 1920, Major League Baseball
declared the "spitball" an illegal pitch. However, a grandfather
clause allowed the 17 remaining established spitballers to continue
throwing the pitch. At the time of their retirements, the pitch
would be banned for good. Burleigh Grimes was one of those 17 pitchers.
The moistened ball aided his efforts and provided the force behind
four World Series appearances, five 20-win seasons, and four years
as the National League complete games leader. Burleigh Grimes played
19 seasons with seven different teams, and in 1964, was elected
to baseballs Hall of Fame.
