Even with his
spectacular 14-year career as an American League pitcher, Lefty Gomez
is frequently remembered for his comical presence both on and off
the field. Fans and teammates alike commonly referred to him as "The
Gay Castillion" or "Goofy". Although he was a comedian,
his career statistics are no laughing matter. While pitching on five
World Series teams, Lefty set a record winning six consecutive World
Series. He also won 20 games four times, led the league in wins twice,
and paced the American League in shutouts for three seasons. Compiling
numbers like that, "Goofy" laughed his way to Cooperstown
in 1972.
